Program Description:
Develop the skills to support every reader in your care with the Coaching Every Reader microcredential. Grounded in the latest evidence-based approaches to reading development, this course goes beyond theory to give K–5 educators, as well as caregivers, practical strategies they can implement right away in order to move from teaching to actually coaching.
This fully online, asynchronous course is designed to fit into the realities of a busy educator's life. Learn on your own schedule, at your own pace, without sacrificing depth or rigor.
Through engaging coursework developed by TC literacy experts, you'll explore how to assess student reading behaviors, tailor instruction to meet a wide range of learner needs, and build the kind of intentional coaching practice that helps students develop as readers. Whether your students are just beginning to read independently or are moving toward greater fluency and deeper comprehension, you'll leave with tools and frameworks to support them all.
New York State educators will earn 9 CTLE hours upon completion, making this an ideal professional development investment that counts toward your certification requirements.

Instructor
Natalie Louis has been a lead researcher in TC Advancing Literacy’s work with phonics instruction and science of reading. Natalie brings years of classroom experience and staff development in thousands of classrooms, as well as humor and common sense to all of her work. She has been instrumental in supporting educators to teach more phonics with grace and expertise. Natalie has also supported teachers in grades 3-8 in understanding the phonics needs of their students, and in innovating ways to incorporate this knowledge into curriculum and instruction. Natalie is a co-author and thought partner of many texts in the K-2 Units of Study in Reading, Writing, and Phonics.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this microcredential, participants will be able to:
- Understand what the foundations of reading development are (e.g., phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) and how to use this information to direct and inform coaching decisions.
- Use formative and informal assessment tools to analyze student reading behaviors and inform targeted instructional decisions.
- Implement evidence-based teaching moves and coaching techniques that help them connect with children and provide varied support
- Design and deliver differentiated coaching that supports both beginning readers and more advanced learners in grades K-5.
- Become familiar and flexible with modelling for and coaching students to decode unfamiliar words and rapidly recognize irregularly spelled high-frequency words to build reading accuracy and fluency.
- Become familiar and flexible with ways to teach and coach vocabulary in context, comprehension strategies, and ways to build more fluent readers.
- Lead rich, text-based discussions by using active listening, asking questions, and modeling sentences stems to coach students in talking well about books with peers.
- Understand the relational and motivational aspects of reading. Learn and employ strategies to help students build more self knowledge and a positive sense of being a reader.
