Program Description:

This course offers a survey of key topics in psychology, including history, research methods, memory, child development, clinical and social psychology, and more. Students will gain a foundational understanding of psychological research methodology and conduct their own supervised study. Additionally, students will apply psychology concepts to the news, and their favorite movies and TV shows, analyzing characters, plots, and contexts using the course material.  By the end of the course, students will be able to describe core psychological concepts and apply them, distinguish among various fields of psychology, discuss significant studies in the field and critically differentiate normal and abnormal psychological processes.

Instructor(s)

Katrina Monton is a doctoral student in the Social-Organizational Psychology program at Columbia University. She holds a BA from Concordia University in Sociology and Psychology and two master’s degrees: an MA in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and an MA in Social-Organizational Psychology at Columbia University. Prior to pursuing graduate studies, she was a professional athlete on the Canadian Women’s National Water Polo team, competing in five Aquatic World Championships, two Pan American Games, and countless tournaments at the national and international levels. Following her retirement from Team Canada, she worked as a clinical counselor for a year in her hometown, Montreal, Canada.

Katrina's broad interests include high-level performance, team development, leadership, organizational culture, psychological safety, and group dynamics. Katrina is passionate about cultivating safe, equitable, and inclusive environments. As a member of the ‘Diversity Dynamics’ workgroup, she conducts mixed-method research focusing on the impact of organizational culture in high-stakes, win-at-all-costs environments. Katrina a course instructor for a graduate-level course, Group Dynamics: A Systems Perspective, and has developed and taught psychology courses for pre-college students over the past three years. In addition, she has been a guest lecturer at the West Point Military Academy in both Military Leadership and Social Psychology.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Describe main concepts and the methods used in the psychology
    Discriminate among different fields of psychology, their goals, topics, and key research studies
  • Discuss major neuroscientific, behavioral, and psychological studies in regard to human mind and behavior
  • Discriminate between normal and abnormal psychological processes
  • Discuss a topic of their own interest from a major theoretical framework of psychology
  • Debate basics of research methodology, its benefits and drawbacks

Who Should Attend

TC Pre-College courses are open to rising juniors and seniors ages 16-18. All courses are conducted in English and learners should have sufficient fluency to participate.

This course is designed for high school students who are exploring potential majors of interest prior to applying for university. By participating in this course, students will gain exposure to various topics within the field of psychology and obtain an evaluation letter to use for their college applications.

Upon Completion

Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Participation.
