Immerse Yourself in College Advising

As one of five programs focused on training college advisors nationwide, the Teachers College Advanced Certificate in College Advising equips dedicated counselors, educators, and other stakeholders to demystify the college admissions process. The Advanced Certificate program, offered online or in-person at Teachers College’s New York City campus, features a specialized college-advising curriculum that trains culturally competent, diverse, and reflective college counselors who serve as agents of change and social advocates for reducing disparities in higher education.

Both the online and in-person program options provide the same curriculum and opportunities to study with exemplar faculty at Teachers College who are leaders in the field. The online program includes the added flexibility of an asynchronous format.

Who Should Apply

This program is open to students pursuing a school counseling degree, current school counselors, or professionals working in college advisement and access who would like to deepen their understanding of and gain specialized training in college advising. 

Program Coursework

The Advanced Certificate is non-degree and credit-bearing, meaning that students receive 12 graduate-level credits from Teachers College, Columbia University. Students may complete the program online or in-person at Teachers College’s New York City campus.

Core Courses

The Advanced Certificate has 4 core courses designed to provide students with a robust, in-depth, and experiential understanding of college advisement. These include:

The primary focus of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to college admissions advisement.  Through the course, students will learn to develop and implement an effective college advisement program that provides access to students from diverse backgrounds.  

This course is a practical and theoretical foundation for understanding the relationships of vocational development theories to career counseling practice. Within the course, consideration is given to both developmental and contextual factors which influence career decisions. Additionally, emphasis is devoted to techniques of appraisal for career counseling including interviews, assessments, and work simulations.  

Students are welcome to take an elective course from the a wide offering of courses in the college. Additionally, students can also engage in a  3 point internship course as one of their curricular requirements. This semester-long internship should be at a high school, specifically focused on college counseling and advisement*: Students will find a high school placement of their choice where they will provide college advisement. Please note that the College does not place students at internships and All students are required to secure an internship on their own. The Program Coordinator, Dr. Riddhi Sandil, is available to provide guidance on this process.

Reviews the demographic data about student access to college, the determinants of social class, race and gender differences in college access and choice, and the influence of colleges upon students.

Time to Completion

The College Advising Advanced Certificate Program can be completed at a pace that is comfortable for the student. Typically, students can complete this program in two semesters.
