Some opportunities require a separate application, while others are administered through specific academic or administrative offices.

External Scholarships
External scholarships can be another valuable source of funding for your education. These awards are offered by private organizations, foundations, corporations, community groups, professional associations, and other organizations. Unlike loans, scholarships generally do not need to be repaid.
Where to Search
Start your search early and explore a variety of reputable sources, including:
- Scholarship databases such as Fastweb and Scholarships.com
- Local community organizations and foundations
- Professional and academic associations related to your field
- Employers and professional organizations
- Organizations connected to your academic, professional, or community interests
Many scholarship databases allow you to create a profile and receive opportunities that match your academic interests, background, and goals.
Protect Yourself from Scholarship Scams
Use caution when searching and applying for external scholarships. Legitimate scholarship opportunities generally do not require you to pay a fee to apply or receive an award.
Be cautious of opportunities that:
- Guarantee that you will receive an award.
- Require payment to apply or receive scholarship funds.
- Request sensitive personal or financial information before you have verified the organization.
- Pressure you to act immediately.
- Direct you to an unfamiliar or unverified website.
Always research the organization offering the scholarship and apply through its official website or another trusted source.
Plan Ahead
External scholarships can help reduce the amount you need to pay out of pocket or borrow to finance your education. Start your search early, keep track of deadlines and application requirements, and apply broadly to opportunities for which you meet the eligibility criteria.
Important: If you receive an external scholarship or other outside funding after receiving your Teachers College financial aid offer, notify the Office of Financial Aid. Outside resources may affect your overall financial aid eligibility.
