The week of events that culminated in the inauguration of Thomas Bailey as Teachers College’s 11th President was a joyous occasion that involved the entire TC community – faculty, students, staff, alumni and friends – and showcased our many strengths.
In the following special report – Opening with a Flourish: A New Era Begins at Teachers College – you can read about, and, in most cases, watch, each and every facet of Inauguration Week.
So pull up a chair and join us at Inauguration, because it’s never too late to experience the Power of We.
"Columbia could not be more proud of its relationship with Teachers College. Today, as we honor President Bailey, I am here to reaffirm that bond."
“[President Bailey’s] success is our success. We cannot succeed unless he does. And we will do what we can to help him succeed."
“We are ready to serve as mentors and ambassadors who will help President Bailey create new pathways for current and future TC students to flourish and to have the rewarding and life-changing experiences that we have had.”
“What really stands out is the way in which you’ve listened to the student body. You could easily treat our conversations as a formality. After all, you have an amazing team of staff dedicated to championing student life issues. But YOU asked and YOU listened because YOU genuinely wanted to know and improve the student experience, and for that I am grateful.”
“You display a genuine interest in learning about the people who make up this great university. We applaud your effort and watch with great anticipation as you implement TC's comprehensive approach to education of the whole person.”
“Tom Bailey is the right leader to push the mission of Teachers College forward.”
“I encourage you to lean on us all of us for any help we can provide. I wish you Godspeed, because when you succeed, we all succeed.”
“Thank you, (President Bailey) for your work elevating the community college voice and setting a high standard for what it means to be scholars and practitioners in our shared purpose of creating pathways where all can flourish.”
“When we teach from the mind to the mind we simply pass along knowledge. When we teach from the heart to the heart, we inspire the mind. Let us all come together under (President Bailey's) leadership and teach to the heart of America.”
“Tom is the right leader for TC today. As he takes the reins at TC, he brings a unique set of skills, experiences and personal qualities to meet both the challenges and the important opportunities before us.”
“[President Bailey’s] warmth and good nature sets the tone... In an over-achieving place, it’s nice to be acknowledged as a human being with value separate and apart from your latest achievement.”
From Mary Swartz Rose and Lawrence Cremin to George Bond and Joan Gussow, the legacy of many of TC's greatest teacher-scholars is carried on through TC's tribute scholarships.
