The TESOL intensive summer program leads to the completion of a Teachers College Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The TESOL Certificate Program is a non-degree program that offers participants from all over the world a unique blend of theory and practice and a hands-on, integrated skills approach to teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), and/or English as a Foreign Language (EFL).

Participants study the fundamentals of how English works, the most up-to-date theories on how languages are learned, and how to assess students. They also explore teaching methodologies and take part in an integrated curriculum of courses and workshops. Topics include creating a learner-centered classroom, language and culture, and course and materials development. One of the highlights of the program is that participants plan for and teach their own classes in TC’s Community Language Program.

TESOL also offers one-day workshops and classes focused on building professional competencies in the field.

Summer Intensive Program

A summer intensive program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The summer intensive program is ideal for candidates who are ready to jump into a new career or for current teachers looking to develop new skills over the summer. Due to the intensive nature of the program, we do not recommend pursuing the summer program while also working.

The 2021 full-time summer intensive program will run from May 17 to July 30.

  • Online portion: May 17 - June 25 (6 weeks)
  • On-site portion: July 5 - July 30 6 (4 weeks)

During the online portion, the hours are flexible. Students will take courses using a highly interactive learning management system called Canvas. The online portion is semi-synchronous, which allows students to study and complete assignments on their own time, abiding by the set deadlines by the instructors. During the onsite* portion, students will be attending classes on Teachers College campus from Monday through Friday, 9:30am - 4:30pm.

*Please note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional onsite portion of the program will be hosted online in the Summer 2021 term.*

Application deadline for full-time summer intensive program: April 30th, 2021.

Summer program registration deadline: May 7, 2021
