Doing narrative research in applied linguistics:
In this talk, Dr. Barkhuizen provides a broad overview of approaches to narrative inquiry in language teaching and learning research. After describing what narrative inquiry is, including pointing out the centrality of stories in narrative research, he provides some examples of narrative research and data analysis to prompt questions for discussion.

 

About the speaker:

Gary Barkhuizen is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of teacher education, language teacher (educator) and learner identity, study abroad, and narrative inquiry. His books include Narrative Research in Applied Linguistics (2013, Cambridge University Press), Narrative Inquiry in Language Teaching and Learning Research (2014, Routledge, with Phil Benson and Alice Chik), and Reflections on Language Teacher Identity Research 2017, Routledge), Qualitative Research Topics in Language Teacher Education (2019, Routledge), and Communicating Identities (2020, Routledge, with Pat Strauss). His latest book is Language Teacher Educator Identity (2021, Cambridge).
