Facing the Climate Crisis: Youth Lessons to "Turn it Around!"
Professor Iveta Silova, Arizona State University, with Saiarchana Darira and Lizzie Quigley, "Turn it Around" Youth Leads
Monday, September 19th, 3:00-4:00pm
273B Grace Dodge Hall

Debates about the climate crisis too often happen without those who will confront and bear its worst impacts in the future - children and youth. This presentation introduces a global, youth-led initiative that foregrounds youth voices and visions of climate futures, specifically focusing on how children and youth understand, define, and envision mainstreaming climate literacy in formal and non-formal education contexts. It starts with the premise that education is directly implicated in the climate crisis and our failure to imagine alternatives. But it can also be a catalyst for radical change. Iveta Silova is Professor of Comparative and International Education and Associate Dean of Global Engagement at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University.  Her research explores the intersections of postsocialist, decolonial, and ecofeminist perspectives in envisioning education beyond the Western horizon. Iveta is a co-lead of the “Turn it Around!” initiative mobilizing youth voices and visions of education futures.
