"'Putting My Education to Use': The Internal Labor Migration of Women in Jordan"
Over the past decade, Jordan has witnessed an increase in the number of single women migrating to the capital city of Amman for work. This mobility upsets some basic assumptions about the conservatism of the regions from which these women come, and the desirability of waged labor for women. Although economic pressures are part of the “push” which has shaped such changes, ideas about education, success, and marriage also figure strongly into the narratives of young women about why they migrate.  In my talk, I will discuss narratives of women about their migration. I discuss specifically how their educational success figures into these narratives and highlight the complexity of the opportunities, desires and demands educational access creates.

Fida Adely is an Associate Professor at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and the Clovis and Hala Salaam Maksoud Chair in Arab Studies. Her research interests include education, labor, development, and gender in the Arab world. Her primary research site has been Jordan and currently she is completing a book manuscript on the internal labor migration of Jordanian women. Since 2013, she has been an associate editor for Anthropology and Education Quarterly. Selected publications by Dr. Adely include: Gendered Paradoxes: Educating Jordanian Women in Nation, Faith & Progress (University of Chicago Press, 2012); “God Made Beautiful Things”, American Ethnologist (2012); “Educating Women for Development” International Journal for Middle East Studies (2009).

Dr. Adely received her PhD in 2007 at Teachers College (Columbia University) in Comparative Education and Anthropology.
