Amelia Simone Herbert Receives 2023 CAE Frederick Erickson Outstanding Dissertation Award

Programs in Anthropology and Teachers College are proud to announce that alum Amelia Simone Herbert has earned the Council on Anthropology & Education (CAE) Frederick Erickson Outstanding Dissertation Award. The CAE has established an annual award to recognize the author of an outstanding dissertation recently completed in the field of anthropology and education. It is named after esteemed educational anthropologist, Frederick Erickson, Professor Emeritus, UCLA GSEIS.

Amelia is now an assistant professor of education and urban studies at Barnard College, Columbia University whose research and teaching interrogate the roles that education plays in the construction and subversion of racialized inequality. Amelia's dissertation is an ethnography that examines how youth, families, and educators navigate the racial and spatial politics of aspiration in the increasingly marketized schooling landscape of Cape Town, South Africa.

We warmly congratulate Amelia on her accomplishment and her continued contributions to the field of education and anthropology!
