Flyer for Ethnographic Journalism event on March 24, 2026

Programs in Anthropology invite you to join us for a moderated conversation on Ethnographic Journalism featuring journalist Jordan Salama, a contributing writer for The New Yorker. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 24th at 7PM in Thompson Hall 136.

This conversation will explore the intersection of ethnography and journalism in the context of migration, displacement, and belonging. Jordan Salama will reflect on his immersive reporting process, the ethics of writing across difference, and how ethnographic sensibilities — deep observation, relational presence, and attention to voice — can shape human-centered storytelling today. We will address the question of what happens when journalism slows down and becomes immersive, relational, and ethically grounded.

Jordan Salama is a writer, journalist, and author known for his ethnographically grounded narrative journalism. Salama’s work bridges the fields of cultural anthropology and long-form journalism, offering vivid portrayals of people and places shaped by movement, environment, and belonging. More information on Salama's work can be found at this link.
