Programs in Anthropology are proud to announce that Mako Miura, Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology & Education, has been awarded the Teachers College Provost's Dissertation Research Award for 2026-2027. This award supports Ph.D. students whose dissertation research advances knowledge in their field. Mako has earned the award for her project project “Two- and Three-Year-Old Children Interacting in Japanese Early Childhood Classrooms with Cultural and Linguistic Diversity.”
Mako is a sociocultural and linguistic anthropologist in training, studying the interactions among young children in multicultural and multilingual early childhood classrooms in Osaka, Japan. Her dissertation research examines what happens when two- and three-year-old children from Vietnam and Mongolia who draw on a multimodal mix of verbal and extraverbal expressions spend time with one another in Japanese classrooms with peers speaking different languages.
We congratulate Mako on this great achievement!
