Courses are designed for immediate impact. You’ll benefit from coursework that’s immediately applicable and agile enough to meet the constantly shifting ecosystem of work.

Participants will complete a seven-course core curriculum focused on Leadership Theory, Research, and Practice, in addition to their pathway-specific courses. The core curriculum includes:

Year One

  • Summer:  Foundations in Leadership Theory and Practice
  • Fall: Contemporary Perspectives of Integrated Leadership
  • Spring: Research Foundations I (i.e., quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods applied to leadership)

Year Two

  • Summer:  Research Foundations II (i.e., qualitative research design and data collection)
  • Fall: Research Foundations III (i.e., research to practice, data-based interventions)
  • Spring: Technology and Leadership

Year Three

The core curriculum builds the foundation of your leadership study. Your pathway sharpens the focus of your doctoral work. Every leader is admitted through one of two pathways, each paired with our shared core curriculum. Choose the one that deepens your professional journey:

  • Global and Independent Education Leadership, for leaders cultivating human flourishing and institutional change across educational, nonprofit, and mission-driven organizations worldwide.
  • Organization Transformation and Strategic Learning, for leaders driving strategic learning and systemic change across complex global organizations.

Global and Independent Education Leadership Pathway

The Global and Independent Education Leadership pathway integrates Education Leadership, Ethics and Equity, Systems and Futures Thinking, Neuroscience, and the Humanities — meeting the demand for strategic, adaptive leaders across independent and international schools; colleges and universities; museums, philanthropic, and other nonprofit organizations; and, education technology and social impact ventures.

You're entering a moment with no playbook and no shortage of noise about what leadership should do now. This pathway won't hand you a formula or script. It draws on nearly fifty years of the Klingenstein Center's legacy as the premier home for independent school and nonprofit leadership, and its deeply networked national and global community of practice, to offer this instead: wise, tested approaches to leadership, paired with the courage to imagine what leadership can become. Through this pathway, you'll explore what's possible, becoming not just future-ready, but future-shaping — with a learner's curiosity and a designer's instinct for building what doesn't yet exist.

Students in this pathway will develop expertise in:

  • Strategic, systems, and futures thinking
  • Designing for agency, agility, and alignment
  • Ethical and Inclusive leadership
  • Neuroscience and Humanities-informed leadership
  • Governance and Risk Culture
  • Cultivating cultures of trust, dignity, and cross-cultural fluency
  • Deep listening, perspective-taking, and discernment
  • Research-grounded, evidence-informed leadership and scholarship

This pathway is for mid-career through senior leaders who lead within independent and international schools, national and regional education organizations, education-focused innovation, and mission-driven institutions across the education, non-profit, and social-impact sectors. It is built for leaders ready to deepen the evidence-based foundations of their practice, to evolve their leadership, and to research, imagine, and offer new and emerging approaches to leadership.

The pathway serves professionals working globally and across the United States in roles such as:

  • Heads of School, Presidents of School, and Executive Directors
  • Associate/Assistant Heads of School and Division Directors

Organization Transformation and Strategic Learning Pathway

The Organization Transformation and Strategic Learning pathway integrates the complementary disciplines of Social-Organizational Psychology, Adult Learning, and Leadership to prepare experienced executives and professionals to lead in increasingly complex organizational environments. Grounded in the premise that sustainable transformation and strategic learning are inseparable, the pathway develops the capacity to drive continuous learning, systemic change, and organizational performance. A hybrid intelligence perspective is central to the pathway, preparing leaders for a future in which human judgment, relational capability, and technological intelligence must increasingly work in concert. Graduates emerge equipped to understand organizations as complex systems and to lead transformation in ways that are theoretically grounded, evidence-based, and responsive to rapidly changing conditions.

This specialized curriculum equips corporate leaders, consultants, and executive coaches with the advanced capabilities required to architect enterprise-wide change. As a candidate in this pathway, you will develop actionable expertise to:

  • Lead complex organizational transformations using evidence-based change management frameworks.
  • Build AI-adaptive organizations by seamlessly integrating emerging technologies with human relational capabilities.
  • Diagnose visible and underlying organizational dynamics that shape behavior, relationships, and the capacity for change.
  • Design strategic leadership-development initiatives that align talent growth with overarching business objectives.
  • Strengthen organizational culture, talent, and performance to sustain a competitive advantage in volatile markets.
  • Critically examine theory and data to inform high-stakes, strategic decision- making.
  •  Leverage advanced applied research to investigate systemic challenges and develop evidence-based solutions.
  •  Generate original, applied knowledge that pioneers new models of strategic learning and organizational resilience in the era of hybrid intelligence.
  • To cultivate these advanced capabilities of this pathway, you will complete a focused sequence of eight specialized courses designed to translate theory into immediate organizational impact.
  • Apply emerging hybrid intelligence practices (i.e., intentional integration of human expertise and AI) for enhanced organizational effectiveness

As part of your application, you’ll be asked to submit a written work product that demonstrates your ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage with complex ideas relevant to leadership.

Examples may include (but are not limited to):

  • A strategic plan you authored or co-led
  • A presentation or keynote you delivered to stakeholders
  • A policy, white paper, or position statement

    • The intended or actual impact of the work
