We are delighted that you are interested in the Programs in Social-Organizational Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Our programs – whether it is the M.A., Ph.D., or Executive M.A. – are unique in their synthesis of the disciplines of social psychology and organizational psychology and in the adherence to a scholar-practitioner model: Theory and research must inform practice and practice must inform theory and research.
Another distinctive feature of the Programs in Social-Organizational Psychology is our belief in the importance of examining and understanding organizational issues from multiple perspectives and contexts – from the individual, the group, and the organizational levels. The application of theory and research to practice and of practice to theory and research, coupled with a dynamic, open-systems approach, informs the development of our curricula, which has been referred to by alumni as “cutting edge” and “essential” to being successful in today’s diverse and rapidly changing job market.
Our innovative curricula and program structure is fostered by the contributions of our nationally and internationally known Faculty and Adjunct Faculty – all of whom embody and put into practice the scholar-practitioner model. In your courses you will engage in dialogue regarding emerging research and theory, share and learn from the real-world experiences of the faculty and your colleagues, and consider the implications for, and applications to, the needs and issues of businesses, governments, schools, and other for-profit and non-profit organizations: For example, issues regarding leadership, organizational effectiveness, group dynamics and team-building, managing organizational conflict, behavioral research, organization change, individual assessment and development, training – just to name a few. Moreover, you will participate in a collegial environment that stresses networking with our community of leaders: your student colleagues.
