When to Connect Students with SSA

The SSA team provides a supportive space to help students process their experiences and navigate next steps. Our aim is to talk through a students unique situation and create a personalized plan by connecting them with existing resources at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the broader NYC community.

SSA provides guidance across several areas:

  • Academic Support: Performance concerns or disengagement.
  • Well-being: Mental health or physical health concerns.
  • Essential Needs: Financial concerns, food insecurity, or housing instability.
  • Life Transitions: Grief, loss, or family and personal emergencies.
  • Administrative Guidance: Support during a Leave of Absence.

When to Connect with Other Support Resources

If you have a specific question regarding the areas listed below, please contact that office directly; however, you are welcome to reach out to Student Support and Advocacy (SSA) if you experience any issues connecting with these resources, have layered concerns, or need further guidance:

  • Financial Aid & Billing: Questions regarding your financial aid package, scholarships, or tuition billing.

  • Academic Advising: Inquiries related to specific curriculum requirements, course registration, and program-specific academic planning.
    • Please contact your Program Advisor and/or Director for more information & support.
  • Columbia Health: CU Health provides clinical counseling, Sexual Violence Response, Alice! Health Promotion, Medical Services, Health Insurance & Immunization Information and more.

  • OASID (Office for Access and Services for Individuals with Disabilities: Coordination of academic accommodations and support for students with disabilities.
  • Public Safety: Assistance with campus safety, lost and found, or non-emergency security concerns.
  • Title IX: Information regarding formal reporting, policies, and investigations related to gender-based misconduct or discrimination. Report a violation here.
  • Confidential Resources: Private support and advocacy for those seeking to discuss concerns or trauma without initiating a formal report (e.g., Ombuds or Religious Life)
  • Student Conduct and Academic Integrity: Addressing concerns related to classroom behavior or community standards, including issues related to plagiarism and the appropriate use of AI in coursework. Report a violation here.
