Responsibilities
Substitute Teachers are used by the New York City public schools, on an as-needed basis, to cover the classroom in the absence of the regular (full-time) Teachers. The primary role of a Substitute Teacher is to continue student learning along the continuum, established by the absent full-time teacher. The responsibilities of the Substitute Teacher in the classroom may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Planning lessons
- Teaching students
- Managing the classroom
- Performing administrative tasks
- Promoting positive student behavior
- Ensuring the safety and security of the students
Eligibility
The minimum eligibility requirements to apply for a Substitute Teacher position are the following:
- Online nomination by a school Principal
- A Bachelor's Degree
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
- Authorization to work in the United States
Substitute Teachers are paid at the per diem contractual rate of $199.27 (as of May 14, 2021). This is for the actual days they have worked. They do not receive any benefits. - $166.67 per day (based on a 6 Hour 50 Minute school day)
- Based on eligibility and performance, a substitute assignment can lead to full-time paraprofessional employment which includes health insurance and pension
Basic Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, the substitute paraprofessional:
- Covers the responsibilities of absent full-time Paraprofessional
- Assists Teachers with class work
- Assists with the daily care of students who have emotional special needs, cognitive disabilities, physical handicaps, autism and/or other special needs.
Eligibility Requirements
- A High School Diploma/GED
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English
- Authorization to work in the United States

- Proof of Passing or Proof of Registration of the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS) Exam

School Aide – X448 Bronx (District 8)
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the principal or of a teacher, relieves teachers of school activities which do not require teaching or other professional skills
- Relieves teachers such as yard, hall, lavatory, study hall and other monitorial and patrol duties
- Handles, stores, and distributes text books, instructional supplies and special materials
- Assists with clerical work of a routine nature
- Assists in maintaining order in the lunchroom and facilitates lunch service
- Maintains school inventories
- Assists with school clerical work of a routine nature.
- Checks reports, notes, lists, etc.
- Handles the arrival and departure of children transported to school by bus.
- Receives the children in the lunchroom, directs them in washing, in disposal of wraps, and in lining up for lunch service.
- Additional duties as requested by teacher or principals
- Facilitates the service of lunch to young children. Assists older children in obtaining lunch. Oversees the return of dishes and utensils and the disposal of refuse.
Minimum Selection Criteria
- Excellent record of attendance and punctuality
- Demonstrated ability to work with supervisors and other school-based staff
- Demonstrated history of good human relations
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently carry out assignments
- Bilingual candidates a plus
Anticipated Work Schedule
Monday-Friday. Hours vary. Minimum of 4 Hours per day, five days per week.

As Per Collective Bargaining Agreement.
