Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know about an NEH Summer Institute for Teachers, Abolitionism and the Underground Railroad this summer from July 7 - 26th, 2024, at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY.  I will be working with Prof. Russell Graham Hodges, author of Root & Branch: African Americans in New York and East Jersey who has enlisted an impressive network of scholars to provide guest lectures. During the three-week residential program we will be based at Colgate University and plan to visit important historical sites in upstate New York and Massachusetts related to the origins of abolitionism in enslaved resistance and the religious questioning of the colonial era, through the Civil War period. I will be leading the pedagogical sessions and my focus will be on using multimodality and attention to space in the interpretation and teaching of this rich history, and guide teachers to design creative, multimodal curricula for their classrooms.

I would be so grateful if you could PLEASE SHARE this widely with your colleagues and teacher networks! The deadline to apply is March 5th

We are interested in selecting teachers, particularly African American educators, across all grades levels and from across the country. Previous participants have included elementary, middle, and high school social studies and English teachers and librarians.

Interested teachers can read about our institute at Colgate.edu/nehabolitionism and email me or Prof. Hodges at neh-abolitionism@colgate.edu if they have questions. We are still seeking a wide and diverse applicant pool so feel free to post a link to our Institute website in your own social media, or forward this email to teachers and networks who might be interested in applying or sharing. Thank you so much for your help!

Warm regards,

Jackie
