The Reading Specialist M.A. Program emphasizes assessment and intervention. Here, you’ll learn to teach reading to all students, from struggling readers to typically developing students from primary through secondary grade levels.
Welcome to the Reading Specialist program
Through the M.A. Reading Specialist program you’ll learn to teach reading and writing to both struggling and typically developing students, individually, in small groups, and in whole classrooms. Our program is grounded in cognitive, linguistic, and socio-cultural factors that contribute to the acquisition of reading and writing skills in developing and struggling readers. Graduates of our M.A. program are prepared for two levels of New York State literacy certification—birth to grade 6 and grades 5-12. At the heart of our program is our practicum where you’ll gain hands-on experience providing literacy assessment and intervention services to children, adolescents, and/or adults.
