In its 26-year history at Teachers College, the Current Issues in Comparative Education (CICE) journal has benefited from dedicated and innovative student leadership. Under the guidance of Marcella Winter (Editor in Chief 2020-22) and Tomás Esper (Editor in Chief 2022-23), the journal migrated to the Columbia Libraries Online Journal System (OJS). This integration with OJS has allowed for an integrated and internally managed editorial review process and more seamless collaboration between the journal and authors. Beyond these improvements, integration with OJS allows for annual reports for CICE, highlighting readership, reach, and impact.

What becomes exceptionally evident through the 2022-2023 CICE Annual Report is the diversity of thought and scholarship in CICE and the global reach the journal has cultivated. From June 2022 to July 2023, CICE published 24 new articles and had almost 16,000 article downloads from over 2,100 site users across 91 countries worldwide.

Our top two most viewed articles included a book review of Felice A. Billups’ Qualitative data collection tools: Design, development, and applications by Christopher J. Fornaro, Kimberly Sterin, and Katrina Lynn Struloeff (2021) and a conceptual article by Monica Desrochers and Jessica Murray (2021), “Applying critical discourse analysis in the classroom: A guide for educators”. Clearly, the journal has applicability for practitioners and researchers alike.

CICE readership was diffused globally but concentrated in the United States, with 48% of readers accessing the journal from the United States. Indeed, English speaking countries top the list, with the UK and Canada coming in second and third. However, following the top three are countries from diverse linguistic backgrounds including Finland, South Africa, India, and Pakistan. Overall, CICE was accessed by readers on almost all continents, demonstrating the global reach of the journal through the OJS platform. While still in the early days of building data history for CICE, the integration with OJS has enabled a more systematic understanding of CICE’s worldwide reach and will continue to support CICE’s commitment to timely, rigorous, and accessible scholarship in international and comparative education.
