The International and Comparative Education Program (ICEP) recently hosted an engaging professional development workshop, “Job Search & Résumé Writing Tips,” led by Professor Mary Mendenhall. The session brought graduate students together for concrete, actionable guidance on preparing competitive application materials and navigating an increasingly complex global job market.

As careers in international education, humanitarian work, global policy, and development continue to expand and diversify, ICEP students are entering a landscape that demands clarity, adaptability, and a strong professional identity. Professor Mendenhall emphasized that, in this evolving environment, students must be able to translate their academic training, field experience, and interdisciplinary skill sets into compelling narratives that resonate with employers.

Throughout the workshop, students explored strategies to leverage their ICEP experience as a clear professional asset, highlighting research and analytical skills, demonstrating intercultural competence, drawing connections between coursework and applied practice, and articulating the value of multilingual or field-based experience. The discussion underscored that ICEP graduates are uniquely positioned to step into roles across NGOs, UN agencies, ministries of education, and research institutions, provided they present their expertise with precision and confidence.

Participants also received practical guidance on crafting résumés and CVs that communicate impact rather than simply listing responsibilities. Professor. Mendenhall encouraged students to use concise, results-oriented language, tailor documents to specific sector expectations, and foreground achievements that demonstrate leadership, creativity, and problem-solving. Students were encouraged to view career development as an ongoing process shaped by curiosity, strategic engagement, and a willingness to articulate their evolving interests.

Five Key Tips Highlighted in the Workshop:

  1. Position your ICEP background strategically.

Emphasize research skills, field experience, multilingual abilities, and intercultural competence when framing your professional narrative.
  2. Use accomplishment-oriented résumé bullets.

Combine action + result, quantify impact when possible, and tailor each résumé to the employer’s expectations.
  3. Leverage networking as a core job-search strategy.

Conduct informational interviews, connect with alumni, and engage with professionals through LinkedIn and relevant associations.
  4. Strengthen your professional identity online.

Craft a clear LinkedIn headline and “About” section, showcase your experience with metrics, and highlight key skills, languages, and projects.
  5.  Make use of TC NEXT resources and AI tools.

Students were encouraged to use TC NEXT’s résumé reviews and Quinncia, the AI-powered résumé evaluator, to refine and strengthen their materials.

This workshop reflects ICEP’s continued commitment to supporting students as they prepare for meaningful, impactful careers around the world!
