The Society for International Education (SIE) and the Peace Education Network (PEN) are two of the most active student organizations within the International and Comparative Education community at Teachers College. SIE supports students who are interested in global education, international development, and cross-cultural learning. The organization creates spaces for peer connection, professional development, and student-led sharing across languages, cultures, and international experiences. PEN brings together students who are committed to peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and the role of education in creating more inclusive and just societies. Through dialogue circles, public events, and collaborative programming, PEN encourages students to explore how learning and community relationships contribute to peace in everyday life.

Together, SIE and PEN have built a dynamic partnership that enriches the student experience at Teachers College. Their collaboration this semester has contributed to a welcoming environment where students can connect across backgrounds, explore global issues, and develop both personal and professional skills.

In October, the two groups partnered with the Sustainability Task Force to host a guided community hike at Van Cortlandt Park. The event combined a reflective trail walk with meditation and journaling activities that encouraged students to slow down and connect with one another away from the intensity of the academic calendar. The hike demonstrated how SIE’s emphasis on global learning and PEN’s focus on peace and dialogue complement one another, offering students a holistic and supportive community experience.

Hike

Earlier in the semester, SIE hosted its annual Fall Welcome on September 24th. Students met the leadership team, spent time connecting through arts and crafts, and set a friendly tone for the year ahead. SIE has also been running its Language Resource Bank (LRB) mini-lessons, a student-led series that invites community members to teach key phrases, cultural traditions, and personal insights connected to their languages. These sessions have created a meaningful space for students to share their identities and learn from the rich diversity of the TC community.

PEN continues to expand opportunities for reflection and conversation about peace, justice, and inclusive education. Its collaborations with SIE and its own independent programming encourage students to think deeply about how educational spaces shape relationships, understanding, and community resilience. The partnership between SIE and PEN demonstrates the power of student leadership in building vibrant academic and social communities.

Students who would like to join events, collaborate, or learn more about SIE and PEN are warmly encouraged to reach out. Both groups welcome new members throughout the year and offer many ways to participate, from attending events to helping lead initiatives.

Society for International Education (SIE)
Students can contact the SIE executive board at sie_studentorg@tc.columbia.edu. Event updates, LRB mini-lesson flyers, and announcements are also shared through the SIE mailing list and their online platforms. Students from all programs are welcome to join.

Peace Education Network (PEN)
Students interested in peacebuilding, dialogue, and education for social justice can connect with PEN through the International and Comparative Education program office or by speaking with current PEN board members at any event. PEN welcomes participation from across Teachers College.

Both SIE and PEN encourage students to attend events, volunteer, lead activities, or simply explore opportunities to engage with the TC community. Their leadership teams are excited to support new members and help them feel at home within the International and Comparative Education program.
