Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute in Bilingual Education

The Bilingual/Bicultural Education Program is pleased to announce the Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute in Bilingual Education (CR-ITI-BE, 2019-2023) Grant award from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to support teacher candidates who hold or are working toward getting an eligible base certificate endorsed by NYSED to pursue the Bilingual Extension Certification in all languages in the newly launched Online Advanced Certificate in Bilingual/Bicultural Education program in summer (mid-May) 2019 for up to $4,500 (tuition reimbursement for the five online courses) per applicant, and up to 20 applicants per year.

NOTE: Aspiring French dual language and immersion teachers are encouraged to apply also for the FIT fellowship ($5000, see below), which will help subsidize the cost of the Online Advanced Certificate program.  

Applicants are expected to register online courses in Summer (mid-May) 2019. Applicants who are awarded CR-ITI-BE grant must commit to teaching in New York after completing the online program from Teachers College for at least 2 years.

Step 1:

  • Completed Application for Admission (choose “ Bilingual/Bicultural Education - Online”);
  • For applicants seeking NYSED Bilingual Extension Certification/CR-ITI-BE grant, if you are not a native speaker of a Language Other than English, contact the Academic Secretary, Ms. Ashley Hawkins, in the Bilingual/Bicultural Education Program office to schedule a language evaluation.

Future Immersion Teacher (FIT) Fellowship

The FIT Fellowship is an initiative of the French Dual Language Fund, launched by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States and the FACE Foundation to support French dual language and immersion programs across the U.S.

The FIT Fellowship provides scholarships for aspiring French dual language and immersion teachers in the United States to pursue specialized graduate degrees and certification programs. The aim of the FIT Fellowship is to build momentum for the next generation of French dual language educators and address a critical teacher shortage in French dual language programs across the country.

Starting 2018/2019, students who are admitted to the program in Bilingual/Bicultural Education, and who speak French, will be encouraged to apply for the FIT Fellowship. The FIT Fellowship will provide $10,000 to students completing their Masters-level with teaching certification, and $5,000 to students completing the Advanced Certification in Bilingual and Bicultural Education only. 

There will be a total of six FIT Fellowship awarded to 2018-2019 incoming students (three for master students seeking certification and three for non-degree students seeking the advanced bilingual certification). Those wishing to apply to the FIT Fellowship are encouraged to apply to the program by the early deadline as the Fellowships will be reviewed and granted as the applications are received, and will end once all six Fellowships have been awarded. Students will be encouraged and able to apply for the FIT Fellowship annually.

Arthur Zankel Urban Fellowship

The Arthur Zankel Urban Fellowship is a financial aid award in the amount of $10,000 per academic year for Teachers College students to work with disadvantaged inner-city youth. The Zankel Fellowship is made possible by a gift from the estate of Arthur Zankel, who was an esteemed trustee of Teachers College. The Zankel Urban Fellows carry on Mr. Zankel's legacy of passion for education by contributing their expertise to programs serving disadvantaged inner-city youth.

Professor Martínez-Álvarez's project, "Special Ways of Knowing: Learning with Bilingual Children with Mild Disabilities", allows for up to four (4) Spanish/English bilingual Zankel Fellows per academic year. Zankel Fellows will be placed in bilingual schools with integrated co-teaching classrooms (ICT) where children with and without IEPs (with and without labeled disabilities) are learning in two languages.

General Merit Scholarships & Aid

Each year, the program selects outstanding students from the incoming class to receive merit-based scholarships. If you wish to be considered for a merit scholarship, you must complete the TC Scholarship Application through the Online Application System from the Office of Admissions.

For financial aid questions, please refer to the TC Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Student Aid makes all final decisions. Financial Aid is recommended based on the following criteria:

  • New are privileged over current students
  • Students close to graduating are privileged over continuing students
  • Distinction between minority, international, and general student financial aid program are made. U.S. minorities are privileged

In addition, college-wide assistance is available to both full-time and part-time students. Aid includes:

  • Teachers College general scholarships
  • Departmental scholarships
  • Minority group scholarships
  • Low-interest loans
  • Work-study opportunities
  • Tuition deferment plan

Funding Links

Outside sources of funding include the TEACH Grant Program, which provides up to $4,000 to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low income families.
