Philosophy is often considered a field of study exclusive to adults. However, Philosophy for Children challenges this perception. In Philosophy for Children, students as young as pre-kindergarten collectively wonder about contestable questions through dialogue. Teachers College Community School, a public school partnered with Teachers College, has welcomed Philosophy for Children into its classrooms for the past two years. Alaina Gostomski is a doctoral student in the Philosophy & Education Program at Teachers College and has brought Philosophy for Children to the school, first as a Zankel Fellow in 2021-2023. In the 2023 - 2024 school year, Alaina worked with the Teachers College community school liaison to expand the program. Now, Alaina works with eight fourth through eighth-grade classes as the school’s Philosopher-in-Reseidence. Alaina is thrilled to continue facilitating discussions about the questions that puzzle her students most and hopes this program will continue to grow.
