Cleft Palate Speech and Feeding

Cleft Palate Speech and Feeding

Dr. Crowley teaches the cleft palate speech course at TC. Over the years she developed a five-day cleft palate speech and feeding training program that has been offered in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Students regularly join Dr. Crowley in these rainings.

Dr. Crowley’s work focuses on creating sustainable resources in that capacity. On leadersproject.org, she created a two-hour series of modules in Spanish, with English subtitles, for SLPs in Latin America who want to address cleft palate speech and feeding issues in children. Most recently, Dr. Crowley created a comprehensive video tutorial course on cleft palate speech and feeding assessment and treatment.

It is rare for graduate students to have the opportunity to work intensively with cleft palate patients and to see cleft palate surgery. TC CSD master’s students are given this opportunity.

Building Capacity: The Cleft Palate Speech Training Project

Catherine Crowley and Miriam Baigorri of Teachers College Columbia University developed the "Building Capacity: The Cleft Palate Speech Training Project" for local professionals to begin to acquire the academic and clinical skills needed to provide quality services to children with cleft lip and palate. This project offers five days of intensive training with academic lectures in the morning and clinical application with patients with cleft lip and palate in the afternoons.
