Gemini for students on AI for Education

Google’s Gemini Available for TC Students

AcFest 2017 - Student Poster Session

Teachers College provides institutional access to Gemini and NotebookLM, offering students generative AI tools with enhanced data privacy. By providing this access, we aim to support your development as informed, critical users of AI—giving you the opportunity to experience these tools firsthand, evaluate their strengths and limitations in your own academic and professional contexts, and make thoughtful decisions about when and how to use them.

TC provides institutional versions of Google’s generative AI tools, Gemini and NotebookLM, to the student community. These services are available through your TC Google Apps account and are designed to support academic work, including idea generation, content drafting, and information summarization.

Privacy and Data Protection

TC’s institutional version of Gemini is subject to a specific agreement with Google regarding the protection of College data.

  • Data Usage: Unlike consumer AI tools, TC’s institutional Gemini will not use your data to train its models.
  • Recommendation: For data privacy reasons, it is strongly recommended that students use this institutional tool for all TC-related work rather than personal or consumer-grade AI services.
  • Important Distinction: These protections apply only when accessing Gemini via your TC Google account. They do not apply when using a personal (@gmail.com) account.

Academic Guidelines and Requirements

The use of generative AI at TC is governed by individual course policies and the College’s academic integrity standards.

Course-Specific Policies

You must refer to the syllabus for each of your courses to ensure compliance with your instructor’s specific policy. Each faculty member sets the guidelines for AI use within their individual course. If you are unsure if a tool is permitted for a specific assignment, please consult your instructor.

Academic Integrity

Improper use of AI in your coursework may be considered a violation of academic integrity. Detailed information is available in the [TC Student Conduct Code].

Accuracy and Bias

Generative AI tools are not consistently accurate or unbiased. Users are responsible for:

  • Careful Review: Critically reviewing all generated content, analysis, or summaries.
  • Supplemental Use: Treating these results as supplemental learning aids rather than official course content, as outputs are not moderated or verified for accuracy by faculty.

Guidance for Graduate Researchers

Students are strongly advised to confer with their academic and/or dissertation advisors before using tools like Google Gemini or NotebookLM for research, thesis work, or other high-level academic endeavors.
